Sivas is a city in central Turkey. It is the seat of Sivas Province and Sivas District.[2] Its population is 365,274 (2022). The city, which lies at an elevation of 1,278 metres (4,193 ft) in the broad valley of the Kızılırmak river, is a moderately sized trade centre and industrial city, although the economy has traditionally been based on agriculture. Rail repair shops and a thriving manufacturing industry of rugs, bricks, cement, and cotton and woolen textiles form the mainstays of the city's economy. The surrounding region is a cereal-producing area with large deposits of iron ore which are worked at Divriği. Sivas is also a communications hub for the north–south and east–west trade routes to Iraq and Iran, respectively. With the development of railways, the city gained new economic importance as junction of important rail lines linking the cities of Ankara, Kayseri, Samsun, and Erzurum. The city is linked by air to Istanbul and İzmir. The popular name Sebastian derives from Sebastianòs, Σεβαστιανός, meaning someone from the city of Sebastia.
The Sivas Gendarmerie Barracks is a historical building constructed by Reşid Akif Pasha in 1908 and actively used until September 1994.
Gökmedrese or Gök Medrese (literally: "Celestial Madrasah" or "Blue Madrasah", also known as Sahibiye Medresesi, is a 13th-century medrese, an Islamic educational institution, in the city of Sivas
More InformationThe museum displays fossil remains of various mammals that lived in the region 9 million years ago, as well as numerous artifacts from the Chalcolithic Age (5500–3000 BC), the Early Bronze Age (3000–2000 BC), and the Hittites, along with artifacts from the Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods.
More InformationThe house of our famous folk poet, Aşık Veysel, was renovated in 1982 according to museum principles and displays his belongings. Restored with a new perspective in 2013, the museum also houses a wax statue of Aşık Veysel.
More InformationThe madrasa, with its central courtyard and arcades, extends along the portal and rear walls. Two large halls are located next to the main iwan (vaulted hall). The madrasa cells are covered with barrel vaults and have windows. The lion and bull relief on the portal, and the reliefs of male and female heads in the medallions at the corners of the main iwan, constitute the distinctive features of this madrasa. The stone and tile work is also of particular importance.
More InformationThe entrances on the east, south, and north sides are arched and have iron wings. In the central courtyard, paved with block stones, there is an elliptical stone pool with water flowing from the mouths of double-headed lions facing in opposite directions. Behind the portico section formed by large columns with single-piece cylindrical bodies, on the south and north sides of the central courtyard, shops are lined up.
